Opening Hymn: “Advent Longing”

PNCC Hymnal 18

In this time of Advent longing, we await our Savior’s coming.

Filled with hope and expectations, of the coming peace salvation.

Send forth dew from heav’n on high, for the Savior’s birth is nigh.

May the dew enrich the earth; yield the Righteous One in birth.

In this time of Advent longing, we await the Savior’s coming.

//Let us cleanse both heart and mind, for the birth of Christ divine.//

Hymn:  O Come O Come Emmanuel”

PNCC Hymnal 32:  verses 1 & 7

O Come O Come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel

That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, shall come to thee O Israel.

O Come Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind;

Bid envy, strife and envy cease; fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.  Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, shall come to thee O Israel.

Closing Hymn:  “O Come Divine Messiah”

PNCC Hymnal 28, verses 1 & 2

Refrain:
Sweet Savior haste; Come, come to earth, Dispel the night and show Thy face, And bid us hail the dawn of grace. O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day.
When hope shall sing its triumph, and sadness flee away.

O come, divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away. R:

O Thou, whom nations sigh for, Whom priests and prophets long foretold, Wilt break the captive fetters; Redeem the long-lost fold. R:

THE CANDLES OF ADVENT

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: HOPE

Every Sunday of Advent the candle lighting is preceded by an opening hymn as the children are processed into the sanctuary and concludes with the hymn "O Come, O Come, and Emmanuel" as the children return to their respective places:

1st Child - Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the Sunday in which we recall the hope we have in Christ.

2nd Child - The prophets of Israel all spoke of the coming of

Christ, of how a savior would be born, a king in the line of David.  They spoke of how he would rule the world wisely and bless all nations.

1st Child - On Christmas day the Christ of our hope was born.  On

Good Friday the Christ of our hope died.  On Easter day the Christ of our hope rose from the dead.  He then ascended into heaven.  On the last day, the Christ of our hope will come again to establish his kingdom overall things on earth.

2nd Child - As the follower of Christ, we await his return.  We light this candle to remember that as he came to us as humbly in the manger at Bethlehem and gave light to the world, so he is coming again in power to deliver his people.

All the Children - We light this candle to remind us to be alert and

to watch for his return.

Light the First Candle

Entire Congregation - Loving God, we thank you for the hope you give us.  Help us prepare our hearts for the Lord's coming.  Bless our worship.  Help us live holy and righteous lives.  We ask it in the name of the one born in Bethlehem.  Amen.

WATCH!

Happy New Year! The Church's calendar begins today. The word "Advent" means "coming" and starts with a message similar to the theme of last week's Mass. Be ready and watch for the coming of Jesus. This can be understood in three ways. First, we anticipate Christ's advent on Christmas. We transcend the materialism of the modern world by a focus on the real meaning of the feast: God enters human existence in a totally personal way. Second, we look forward to Jesus' arrival in our lives through the blossoming of our faith. We bring his body into the world through our union with him in the communion of saints. Finally, we speculate on the end of this universe at the conclusion of time. The universe is not self-sustaining. Eventually it will terminate in some sort of extinction. Time is finite. It will reach a culmination either in a vast cataclysm or total dissolution. Then the real universe will begin in God.

We are the clay, you are the potterFirst Sunday in Advent

      Isaiah 63:16-17, 19; 64:2-7

      Psalm 80

      1 Corinthians 1: 3-9

      Mark 13: 33-37

KEY VERSE: "What I say to you, I say to all:  Be on guard!”

READINGS:  Our readings remind us that Christ is coming, and we should stay awake for we don’t know when He will come.  We are to be prepared at all time; Jesus says “be constantly on the watch.”  These readings are teachings for us to learn and live.

REFLECTING: We're probably all a bit impatient when we have to wait. It doesn't really matter if it's an unexpected wait or an event we know will eventually come. Waiting can be a trying time.

Think back through the times you've waited. Maybe you waited for a "big" day like graduation, your wedding, the birth of a child, a reunion with a loved one. Or there are the times you've had to wait unexpectedly in long lines at the post office, for someone who is late, or for a tow truck. How do you fill your time waiting? Are you the friendly sort who makes conversation with anyone nearby; or do you fidget, fuss, and fume at the inconvenience? Do you read or keep yourself busy to pass the time? Consider which response is most healthy and helpful. What will you do today and tomorrow that will please Jesus Christ while you wait for his return?

PRAYING: Lord Jesus, I am waiting for Your coming this Advent Season.  I pray that I keep a vigilant watch and be prepared each day.  You are the potter, I am the clay, I am all the work of Your

Hands.   I pray also that You lead me to bring the Good News to all who I am in contact with as I continue my earthly pilgrimage.

Come, Lord Jesus!  Come and visit your people.
We await your coming.  Come, O Lord.
