CLOSING HYMN     “Love Divine, Love All Excelling”         Bulletin

Opening Hymn:  “This Day God Gives Me”

This day God gives me, strength of high heaven

Sun and moon shining, flame in my hearth

Flash of lightning, wind in its swiftness

Deeps of the ocean, firmness on earth.

This day God sends me, strength as my guardian

Might to uphold me, wisdom as guide.

Your eyes are watchful. Your ears are list’ning

Your lips are speaking, friend at my side.

God’s way is my way; God’s shield is round me,

God’s host defends me, saving from ill

Angels of heaven, drive from me always

All that would harm me stand by me still.

Rising I thank you, Mighty and strong One

King of creation, Giver of rest,

Firmly confessing, Three-ness of Persons

Oneness of God head, Trinity blest.

Everyone of God's promises a Yes

Closing Hymn: “Love Divine, All Love Excelling”

Love divine, all love excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down

Fix in us your humble dwelling, All your faithful mercies crown

Jesus source of all compassion, love unbounded love all pure

Visit us with your salvation, let your love in us endure.

Finish then your new creation, Pure and  spotless, gracious  Lord

Let us see your great salvation, Perfectly in you restored

Changed from glory into glory, Till in heav’n we take our place

Till we sing before th’almighty, Lost in wonder, love and praise.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. It is also a time of special almsgiving and stewardship.

Why we receive the ashes? Following the example found in the book of Jonah about the Ninevites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on earth. We remember this when we are told "Remember, man (woman) is dust, and to dust you shall return, but our souls is destine for heaven" Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice. The distribution of ashes comes from a ceremony of ages past. Christians who had committed grave faults performed public penance. On Ash Wednesday, the Bishop blessed the hair shirts which they were to wear during the forty days of penance, and sprinkled over them ashes made from the palms from the previous year. Then, while the faithful recited the Seven Penitential Psalms, the penitents were turned out of the church because of their sins -- just as Adam, the first man, was turned out of Paradise because of his disobedience. The penitents did not enter the church again until Maundy Thursday after having won reconciliation by the toil of forty days' penance and sacramental absolution. Later, all Christians, whether public or secret penitents, came to receive ashes out of devotion. In earlier times, the distribution of ashes was followed by a penitential procession. The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.  This is why we spend time in attending special Lenten devotions and food abstinence making a sacrifice pleasing to God and not ourselves.

Lenten Devotional Material and special Lenten Offerings are available in the parish vestibule and bookrack for your Lenten pilgrimage and don’t forget to attend Lenten Services.

First Reading: Isaiah 43:18-19, 21-22, 24-25
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 41
Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:18-22

Gospel: Mark 2:1-12

KEY VERSE: "They were awestruck; all gave praise to God saying we have never seen anything like this.:  Mark 2:12

READING: In today's Gospel, we continue to hear Mark's reports about Jesus' preaching and healing. Jesus has returned to Capernaum, which Mark refers to as his home. Jesus' popularity with the people thrives, and he preaches to them. The crowds are so great that the house is filled, and no one can enter through the door. Determined to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus, four men break through the roof and lower the man into the house. Jesus was moved by the faith displayed by the four determined men, and so he addressed the paralyzed man, declaring that his sins are forgiven. This passage highlights for us the connection between faith and Jesus' healing power. Jesus is said to have been moved by the faith of the paralyzed man's friends. Our prayers for those who are sick bring to them the healing presence of Jesus.

REFLECTING: The sacrament of reconciliation is always available to us. Before we receive that sacrament we are obliged to examine our consciences. We are asked to reflect critically on the state of our lives and the results of our actions. Have we allowed our gratitude for God's pardon to change our hearts? Give some serious consideration to receiving the sacrament of reconciliation with true sorrow and sincerity. Let remorse be clear in your heart and in your actions. Remember what Jesus taught us; “forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespasses against us.”

PRAYING: Lord, let me always say YES to your teachings so that I can live the life that You have called me to live through Your Son Jesus, Who is Lord of all.
